The<\/span> i<\/span>G<\/span>E<\/span>M<\/span> 2021 team of IISER Tirupati has bagged a<\/span> Gold Medal<\/span> in the International<\/span>
Genetically Engineered Machine (<\/span>iG<\/span>E<\/span>M<\/span>) competition for the third consecutive year making it<\/span>
a<\/span> hattrick<\/span> of gold medals in this competition.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
The project,<\/span> \u201c<\/span>OviCloak: A Novel Contrace<\/span>ptive for Uterus Owners<\/span>\u201d<\/span> was also nominated<\/span>
for seven<\/span> Track<\/span> awards, the highest number of nominations for any Indian team in the history<\/span>
of iGeM; and the nominations were in the following categories:<\/span><\/span><\/span>
1.<\/span> Best New Application<\/span><\/span>
2.<\/span> Best Safety and Security<\/span><\/span>
3.<\/span> Best Wiki<\/span><\/span>
4.<\/span> Best Education<\/span><\/span>
5.<\/span> Best Inclusivity<\/span><\/span>
6.<\/span> Best Integrated Human Practices<\/span><\/span>
7.<\/span> Best Sustainability<\/span><\/span><\/span>
The OviCloak is not just a project for competition but a vision to bring about a change in the<\/span>
society through concerted efforts.<\/span><\/span> The<\/span> project aimed to genetically modify<\/span> the<\/span> commensal<\/span>
bacteria of the fallopian tubes<\/span> to produce an ovum<\/span>–<\/span>specific contraceptive molecule in a<\/span>
regulated<\/span> manner.<\/span> This<\/span> is<\/span> a<\/span> non<\/span>–<\/span>hormonal<\/span> approach<\/span> to<\/span> the<\/span> spectrum<\/span> of<\/span> Long<\/span>–<\/span>Acting<\/span>
Reversible Contraceptives.<\/span><\/span> The Institute will continue spreading the acquired knowledge<\/span> t<\/span>o<\/span>
make this society a better place to live<\/span>–<\/span>in.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>
The<\/span> iG<\/span>E<\/span>M<\/span> team of 15 students from the Biology<\/span>, Physics and Chemistry<\/span> stream<\/span>s<\/span> of BSMS<\/span>
2018 & 2019 batches<\/span> were mentored by Dr. Raju Mukherjee, Assistant Professor, Prof. G.<\/span>
Ambika, Professor, and Prof. B. J. Rao, Professor who has taken over charge subsequently<\/span>
as Vice<\/span>–<\/span>Chancellor, University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
IISER Tirupati is proud of its students for<\/span> this commendable achievement which involved deep<\/span>
commitment, hard work besides overcoming the challenges posed by the<\/span> p<\/span>andemic.<\/span> IISER<\/span>
Tirupati in<\/span> just its sixth year of being set up in 2015 has been able to attract some of the<\/span>
brightest young minds, who<\/span> are leading this relentless quest for excellence in science.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
The<\/span> iG<\/span>E<\/span>M<\/span> team gratefully acknowledges the invaluable guidance and support reposed in this<\/span>
young team of IISER Tirupati and also appreciated constant support, encouragement provided<\/span>
