The 16-pole ion trap mass spectrometer currently being developed at IISER Tirupati features an electrospray ion source, ion funnel, a quadrupole ion guide, a quadrupole mass filter, and a 16-pole radio frequency ion trap. Gas-phase biomolecular ions can be stored for several seconds inside the ion trap and can be probed by laser to study processes such as photodissociation, fluorescence, etc. The ions extracted from the trap are analyzed by a data acquisition system interfaced with a microchannel plate (MCP) detector.
