Title: Functional Molecular Vessels

Abstract: Properties of chemical entities in confined nanospace are expected to be different from their bulk properties due to restricted motions and high effective concentration in the confined space. This restricted degree of freedom along with other non-covalent interaction/s may stabilize the transition state of a reaction leading to enhanced catalytic turn over. Chemistry of photochromic compounds in confined space will be discussed. My lecture will focus on design of molecular barrel having confined space decorated with multiple urea moieties for catalytic Michael reaction in aqueous medium. Our recent efforts on designing chiral molecular vessels including their chiral recognition will also be discussed (Figure 1). A recently developed strategy on constructing enantiopure cage without using chiral donor/acceptor will be highlighted in the lecture. My lecture will also focus on the use of confined space for the separation of isomeric anthracene from phenanthrene by simple aqueous extraction using a Pd(II)-molecular vessel.
