Academic Background:
I completed my Bachelors in Botany (Honours) from Hansraj College, University of Delhi and its comprehensive coursework shaped my interest in Plant Sciences to a great extent. I pursued my Masters in Plant Biology and Biotechnology at University of Hyderabad. Here, my interest grew deeper in academic research on Plant Molecular Biology leading me to join Ph.D. at IISER Tirupati. Currently, in my doctoral research I am working on unravelling the role of R2R3-type MYB transcription factors in drought tolerance and oil production in model plant Arabidopsis thaliana and Brassica sp.
Research Interest
The MYB (Myeloblastosis) superfamily is one of the most abundant transcription factors (TFs) families in plants. Among four classes of MYB TFs, R2R3-MYB class TFs are extensively amplified in plants. The R2R3-MYB TFs have diverse functions such as abiotic stress response, secondary metabolism, cell fate and identity and developmental processes. The role of one such R2R3-MYB TF, AtMYB96, has been reported in enhancing drought stress tolerance and increase in seed oil content. Brassica, one of the important oilseed crops in India, are constantly facing reduction in their potential yield due to drought stress. It limits the crop life and eventually has a direct effect on the total oil production. To address this problem, I am working on to identify and characterize selected R2R3-MYB TFs involved in drought tolerance and seed oil production in model plant Arabidopsis thaliana and Brassica which will assist in the understanding of the complex transcriptional regulatory networks controlled by R2R3-MYB TFs. The proposed study is important because of need of drought tolerant crops in coming years owing to the increasing trend of earth temperature.
Advisor Information
Dr. Swarup Roy Choudhury is an Assistant Professor in Biology department at IISER Tirupati. His research interest predominately focuses on identifying the molecular and cellular mechanisms behind signal transduction in plants to unravel plant signaling pathways extending from receptors to signaling cascades and target genes that are crucial to root nodule development, plant architecture determination and stress adaptation.
Dr. Swarup Roy Choudhury did his Ph.D. from Bose Institute, Kolkata. After that, he completed post-doctoral fellowships at Bose Institute and Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, USA. After a short stint as Research Scientist at Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, in 2019 he joined IISER Tirupati.
