Abstract:

We often come across solid particles or water droplets being carried by turbulence: such as in sandstorms, in snow avalanches, in pollutant dispersal and in clouds. In this talk I will describe how turbulence is made up of vortices. Then we will discuss how tiny spherical particles behave near a vortex, and generalise this understanding to turbulent flow.
