Abstract:

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is the most powerful and sensitive telescope in space to date. It conducts astronomical observations in the infrared wavelength. This talk will briefly discuss this engineering marvel, its design, various scientific instruments, and its amazing capabilities. I will also discuss the major science themes of the mission, the astrophysical importance of the first images released by JWST, what they tell us about its performance so far and what to expect in the coming months and years with JWST.

Short-bio:

Dr. Jessy Jose is an Associate Professor, Physics at IISER Tirupati. She obtained her PhD from Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), Nainital, and subsequently held post-doctoral positions at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore, and Kavli Institute for Astronomy & Astrophysics, Beijing. In 2017, She joined the faculty of IISER Tirupati. Her research interests are Observational Astrophysics, Star and planet formation, High mass star-forming regions in the Milky Way, Young brown dwarfs, and free-floating planetary mass objects in the solar neighbourhood.
